That is the overpowering of sweetness that can sweeten you to cloud 9. No kidding! I dont really have a sweet tooth and 3 pieces is enough to make me lose my taste buds. I like it because it has the natural taste and sweetness of mango. And genourous amount of fresh mango cubes, sago and pomelo bits are added for the extra 'oomph'. The sweet,sour,bitter combination makes it more addictive. A great dessert to chill on a hot day! Other recommended desserts i've tried is the dried beancurd with gingko nuts and steam carrot cake which doesnt taste like a mash of flour. The prices are affordable from minimum of $6.00 for a regular size and $10 onwards for large (infact it is XXL). You get to enjoy your meal hot and fresh cos food is prepared once you place your order. Be there early, i waited for an hour for my meal! As compared to most western stalls, they serve only chilli and tomato sauce. At Botak Jones, you can get to enjoy both HP sauce and Malt vinegar!

Here are some dishes i strongly recommend, havent got the chance to try out the rest (due to the limited space in my stomach). But i will certainly make my trip down again. =)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qDKvoSsM388/Ri3quDEuFgI/AAAAAAAAARc/DySbkgKcpts/s320/chix_dog.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5056956033426920962" />
Giant chicken hotdog..

The sausage seems no big deal when i first set my eyes on it cos these kind are easily available in most supermarkets. In my opinion it doesnt taste like those stereotypical breaded fish & chips. As for most of them, crumbs are tasteless and fish is unseasoned. This is different. Because, only premium pacific dory is used and fish is seasoned before breaded with japanese bread crumbs. Remember to dip it lightly with tartar sauce so as to avoid covering up its original taste. Fat wavy fries are generously served with spices lightly sprinkled over. Delicious! I found this shop tt serves kolo mee. The above is Char Siew kolo mee which looks very similar to our local wantan mee. Note, the noodle used is different. With a wriggly maggie mee like texture, it gives a complete different sensation to your tastebuds as compared to the usual wantan egg noodles. Every bite is very Q and you jus crave for more. Its served plain w/o sauce but once you add one teaspoon of chilli, you'll see the magic! It all lies in the special blachan chilli, very tasty and not too spicy. So add more chilli!

Location: North Bridge Rd (Chinatown)
Price:$3.60 +++
Rating: Good!

Prata

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qDKvoSsM388/RaDkO5VojfI/AAAAAAAAAHw/3WjbF2eYb48/s320/kopitiam.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5017260929451593202" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qDKvoSsM388/RaDkO5VojgI/AAAAAAAAAH4/VVI2MqVx8Fg/s320/indianstall.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5017260929451593218" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qDKvoSsM388/RaDkO5VojhI/AAAAAAAAAIA/IVaBd71yIRs/s320/prata.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5017260929451593234" />
My irresisitable prata! Most beehoon are stir fried with light soy sauce thus leaving it bland and tasteless, worst of all u gotta rely on extra gravy for taste. Other than fresh fish meat, the soup plays an extremely impt role, else its not worth wasting your time in e queue. Added with fishhead bones (or other bones), chinese wine and flavouring makes the soup light and sweet. I personally recommend fried fish meat instead of fresh sliced fish cos its so thinly sliced that you could hardly taste anything. I didnt managed to take a pic of my Tom Yam cos there was too much steam! Yup..back to Pineapple rice..see those juicy prawns?! Too bad..they aint that generous though. Thai herbs added for aroma and crunchy pineapple cubes for the sweetness. Not bad!

The last dish ordered is the sambal kangkong. Located at Amoy food centre, it is popular among office executives and you may have to queue for at least 30mins.

Personally, i find the soup rather different as compared to most fish soups i've tried elsewhere. Fried onions mixed with lard sits well with the soup to enhance its flavour. No worries, its not oily. I bet the secret recipe lies with the soup..tt's why its soooo outstanding and they dare to charge at $5 (soup only, 30cents for rice). The fish slices are fresh and smooth ( i dont know wat sorta fish is that) but it just taste heavenly. No doubt the price is steep for a hawker meal but its really good that you wont mind paying tt extra dollar.

Also available in fish soup + prawns at $7 and large prawns for $10.

Location: Amoy Food Centre (2nd floor), nearest mrt is Tanjong Pagar
Rating: Die die must try
Price: $5 to $10

Lan Zhou La Mian

Whenever i make a trip down to chinatown, i'll definitely dine at the famous Lan Zhou La Mian shop located along Smith Street!

Other than just La Mian, they have many varieties in their menu and its widely popular among tourists.

Achar will be served as an appetizer before any main dish.

One of the 'die die must try' dishes..the Chicken Chop La Mian~. Hail to Carl's Jr!!! I simply love it..*slurp* See the advert below? ALMOST ACTUAL SIZE..believe it? To tell you honestly, the burger is large in diameter (another 1/2 more compared to normal burgers) Not that exaggerating lah~ by the way, the advert mentioned "ALMOST".. so don't feel so cheated. =p

What did i order? Santa Fe and fish fillet burger together with criss cross fries and onion rings. The serving size is SOLID! Santa Fe burger is around the same size compared to any burger in BK. It's grilled spicy chicken is coated with a layer of golden melted cheese and garnished with the usual veggies.(lettuce, pickles, onions etc etc..)Its level of spicyness is just right thus the natural taste of grilled chicken isnt covered up, together with its tender and juicy texture makes you feel you're on cloud 9. Fish fillet burger is special too! The serving size is twice of Santa Fe and its different from those breaded fish burgers you take at Mcdonald's or BK. I dont know how to describe..the fish coating is similar to that of Long John's, having 2 pieces put together layered with lots of lettuce and mayonese. Shiok!
I love the criss cross fries!!! That is the best!! Big serving and each piece is close to my palm size..not kidding! Onion rings are very very crispy but hmmm the fries would make a better choice for a side meal.

Plus point here! Free flow of drinks! When you place your order, you'll get an empty cup (size of BK's) and fill it up yourself at the drinks dispenser. Infact one cup is more than enough unless you drink like a camel..

Another plus point! Carl's Jr is different from many fastfood restaurants. Why?? I had my meal on a saturday evening. So i expected getting a seat seems impossible because they are kinda limited but to my surprise, a waitress actually helped us to get a place if we dont mind sharing! Cool! Its really my first time to see such a good service in a FAST FOOD restaurant. On top of that, they provide us with unlimited use of serviettes! That is very impt!

Its definitely a place you must visit. The price is well..slightly more costly than usual fast food restaurants. You pay twice the cost but you get TWICE the satisfaction! Trust me~ you wont regret and you'll come bk for more!

After reading this review...BK, Mcdonald's etc...are dethroned! =ppp

Location: Marina Square (Level 1)
Price: $8.40~ a meal
Rating: Die die must try!

Chin Chin Eating House

When comes to hainan food...its always their hainanese chicken rice that pops into our mind. But there is so much more than chicken rice, the hainanese are famous for their culinary skills and one great place is at Chin Chin Eating House...

Besides being famous for their chicken rice, they have other variety of dishes you can choose from (the 'zhu cao' style). Not to worry, the price is reasonable and it comes in generous servings even for the smallest dish! No GST or service tax!

*drooling* These are a few of my favourite dishes~

Other than Boon Tong Kee, my next favourite is Chin Chin Hainanese Chicken, you can taste its juiciness within. Not kidding! You'll just crave for more!

Its extremely crowded during peak hours and you DON'T have to worry about the long waiting time for a table or your meal. Because they are efficient (meals served in less than 10mins) and they can get you a place outdoor if tables are full inside. Certainly one of the best eating place to bring your friends and family along.

Location: Purvis Street
Price: $3.00 onwards
Rating: Excellent

Fei Fei wantan mee

Familiar? It's the famous wantan mee stall in the Joo Chiat district and recommended by makansutra.

Along the junction of Joo Chiat and Everitt Rd, facing diagonally opposite the signs. There are 2 stalls both in different coffee shops, one on the left of this sign and the other on the right. But the one on the left is super crowded...why so? taste better?

Here is it!
So now..wat's so special abt fei fei wantan noodles?

Note the difference? This is an unusual wantan mee. I was shocked when i saw it at first sight, not appealing. The gravy is not ready-mixed, you have to DIY. No soup? If you want to get a bowl of soup, dont bother to ask the stall assistant, her reply will be:"Take it yourself!!" Dont be surprised, everyone is treated the same way. I find this mgt kinda stupid though i know they just wanna be more efficient. Wat's the difference rite? If they can serve you a bowl of noodles, why not serve the soup as well? pengz!!

The noodle texture is springy (quite similar to fishball noodle 'mee kia') and mixes well with chilli sauce on my spoon (lard added for flavour).You cant see the wantan here but all i can say its very tasty. I love it! The soup too! HAHA! I dont mind walking bk for more..=p

Overall conclusion? Not bad~ worth trying. A different style for a wantan mee.

Location: Joo Chiat Rd
Price: $2.00
Rating: Good
